Lib Dem muddle over ‘backroom deals’

The Cambridge News’ letters page has a good showing from Tories today. They printed my letter about the Lib Dems (reprinted) below, as well excellent letters by Stephen Oliver (http://stephenoliver.me) and Richard Nomington (http://blog.richardnormington.com).

Dear Sir / Madam,

The Lib Dem candidate’s recent letter (10 March) says he prefers ‘values’ to ‘backroom deals’. Good. I agree.

So I hope the Lib Dems will now tell us how they will act if they hold the balance of power in a hung parliament after the election. Will they plump for the Tory values of social responsibility and economic growth or the values of Gordon Brown’s Labour Party?

If the Lib Dems refuse to answer this question, they could be forcing a backroom deal on us whether we like it or not. And if they can’t or won’t make clear where they stand, then voters may be better off making the choice between David Cameron and Gordon Brown themselves.

Yours sincerely,
Nick Hillman
Conservative Candidate for Cambridge
